The Big Lunch in St Helens

Posted on 31 Jul, 2022

We loved The Big Lunch in St Helens and we hop you did too.

This year was the perfect year to celebrate the success of UC Crew over the last 18 years as it evolved into Powered by Hip Hop CIC and plans to bring even more communities together through Hip Hop, arts, culture, friendship and of course food!

The Queens Jubilee offered the perfect opportunity to bring people together to celebrate community spirit and unity, in our Jubilee-inspired Hip Hop block party, which was instrumental in creating the Hip Hop culture in New York, USA.

The St Helens Jubilee Jam took place at St Helens Sea Cadets on Sunday 5th June 2022, which featured dance performances by St Helens Dance Schools, Breaking (Break Dance) competitions, djing, graffiti arts, partying and a community lunch.

We have 150 people attend the St Helens Jubilee Jam and Big Lunch, many of these were local residents but some have travelled from Wales, Birmingham, Huddersfield, Leeds and Oxford to join the celebrations.

Attendees of the events loved the community spirit, the opportunity to chat with long-lost friends, make new friends and have time out of the busy day to have a bite to eat and catch up.

We had never organised a Big Lunch in St Helens before on this scale, we actively promoted bringing your own lunch, scheduling a big lunch break for everyone and having a well-deserved get-together around food to reflect, socialise and take in the community spirit.

We have big plans to add a Big Lunch event to our annual calendar, as everyone benefitted from taking time out of their day to get to know one another by having lunch together.

Community Foundation for Merseyside and Arts Council England funded our event.
